It is the most frequent blood disorder in the U.S. and affects about 6% of the population, especially people with long-term conditions, children, and women (WebMD Editorial Contributors, 2023). Though there are many types of anemia, they are divided into what causes them: decreased production of red blood cells, acute blood loss, and increased destruction of red blood cells. Anemia caused by reduced production of red blood cells (RBC) occurs due to a decrease in the production of erythrocytes. The simulation to produce more erythrocytes corrects anemia unless there are underlying conditions such as renal failure, bone marrow disease, and rheumatoid arthritis (Woo & Robinson, 2016). Usually, the kidney stimulates the production of erythropoietin, which stimulates cell proliferation in the bone marrow to produce more RBCs, maintaining hemoglobin in the blood at normal levels (Bhoopalan et al., 2020). On the other hand, acute blood loss anemia may be a result of surgical blood loss, anticoagulation, gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding, and trauma.
