Prepare a 10-minute presentation (10-15 slides, not including title or reference slide) on organizational culture and values. Describe how alignment between the values of an organization and the values of the nurse impact nurse engagement and patient outcomes. Discuss how an individual can use effective communication techniques to overcome workplace challenges, encourage collaboration across groups, and promote effective problem solving. Identify a specific instance from your own professional experience in which the values of the organization and the values of the individual nurses did or did not align. Describe the impact this had on nurse engagement and patient outcomes. While APA style format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center. This assignment uses a grading rubric. Instructors will be using the rubric to grade the assignment; therefore, students should review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the assignment criteria and expectations for successful completion of the assignment. Organizational culture influences the values that define an organization and the two are linked.
Culture relates to the beliefs and attitudes that people have in the workplace and this influences their decisions.
New employees get to learn about the organizational culture and common behaviour in the workplace, and this is critical to achieving corporate goals.
Workers adhere to values in the workplace which are part of the culture, and hence both values and culture cannot be separated from each other.
The values in a medical institution help define the culture, they also highlight on the institution’s goals (McSherry et al., 2012).
Nurses ought to perform at their best to achieve personal goals as well as those of the institution, and this helps to improve patient outcome.
Using effective communication techniques
Focusing on open communication helps to build trust, allowing people to work more as a team.
Communication is a two way process and it is through active listening that one is better able to communicate effectively and come to an understanding with another person or people (Sully & Dallas, 2005).
Honest expression is vital in solving problems, as people communicating are more likely to trust each other, in cases where message receivers understand that the communication is honest (McCormack & McCance, 2011)
Another critical technique is to understand the audience, and this allows the initiator of communication to send appropriate signals and improve understanding with receivers of messages.
