Healthcare Administration
Introduction
For decades, the healthcare sector has been experiencing several challenges that have affected overall performance. The rate of diseases and other disorders in the United States, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity, and drug abuse, has been rising tremendously. Also, severe illnesses such as cancer, injuries, suicides, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) have been giving the hospital a tough time in finding measures to reduce these cases. Thus, healthcare providers need to find mechanisms to solve these problems. Healthcare administration is an essential part of the healthcare sector that can greatly improve overall effectiveness.
Healthcare administration professionals work hard to manage, lead, and administer healthcare systems, including hospitals, to ensure patients obtain the most efficient care. This paper critically analyzes the facility's role in delivering healthcare services, my role and responsibilities as the healthcare administrator, the roles of staff, the contribution of stakeholders, and ethical, legal, and healthcare policies the organization must adhere to. The paper also focuses on the steps the administrator needs to implement to address HIPAA privacy, security, breach notification rules, and personal thoughts from the case scenario.
Facility and Its' Role in the Delivery of Healthcare Services
The nursing department in the hospital is crucial in facilitating various operations to function smoothly for the betterment of the patient and overall healthcare. In our healthcare, the nurse department is designed to offer care for patients normally, as stated by the jurisdiction of the healthcare center. One of the major and important roles is offering medications and treatments. The nurses work hard to administer medication and treatment to the patients in a doctor's order. They can also assist in developing a treatment plan for the patients. On the other hand, the department is responsible for undertaking diagnostic tests. Nurses in this department perform several diagnostic tests, such as collecting tissue, blood, urine, and stool samples. Nurses must concentrate on the data to ensure physicians administer these tests accordingly since they require information to carry out patient diagnosis tests and develop a treatment plan. These activities are essential in improving patients' overall health.
Furthermore, the department is responsible for monitoring the patient's health. Nurses must manage and monitor the patients to keep data for any visible or suspicious symptoms, which can lead to diagnosis or adjustment in the treatment plan. They achieve this by checking the patient records to ensure they list the correct drugs and dosages. Alternatively, they offer training services to newer medical team members, such as nurses' aides. Therefore, the more recent member can integrate easily with the department's functions through this strategy.
Administrator’s Role and Responsibilities
As the healthcare administrator, there are various roles I must accomplish by interacting with surgeons, nurses, doctors, and other staff. Generally, Health administrators are vital in directing healthcare resources based on the needs of the community, enabling them to have a chance to assist in addressing gaps in healthcare access and results and learn how to do so (Cronin et al., 2019, p 57). Operation management, financial management, legal responsibilities, and communication are my roles and responsibilities in the institution. I am responsible for formulating, managing, and adjusting the institution's plan for effective and smooth operations. As a result, the hospital can realize a safe and quality work environment through these operations. Moreover, I manage a team of finance account executives and individual accountants. I have learned various skills and strategies to enhance my efficiency and effectiveness in financing. Healthcare administrators are well-skilled in managing finances, including billing cycle details. Alternatively, my duty as the administrator is to ensure I execute some legal tasks. I am responsible for developing and maintaining a compliance program for state laws and regulations. Also, I am responsible for having the current knowledge of health insurance regulations to avoid problems related to insurance coverage.
Finally, communication, team building, and accountability are other responsibilities I must carry out. These competencies are vital in providing general direction for those preparing to be future health administrators (Tacconelli et al., 2020, p 337). I oversee information management, community relationships, and internal communications. Developing lines of communication would enable the system to function smoothly and efficiently. Communicating the center's mission and vision and traveling to professional conventions to improve community relations are essential. The department's success massively depends on the abilities of the healthcare administration. Through forward-thinking, creativity, collaboration, and self-discipline, I am confident the patients and all other staff would benefit from the institution.
Roles and Responsibilities of Union and Non-Union Staff and Volunteers
Unions and non-union staffs are also vital in their roles and responsibilities. The labor unions are responsible for enhancing the condition of the employees to ensure they strengthen family, individual, and community wellness. For example, the union staff fights for wage equality. They achieve this by encouraging an increase of low and middle-wage employees than those of high-wage employees. They are also responsible for ensuring there are standards for non-union employees to adhere to. These activities are vital in enabling unionized and nonunionized workers to work in a safe environment where their needs are met.
Furthermore, the volunteers in various units in the hospital play different responsibilities essential to healthcare wellness. These units include nursing units, surgery, admitting, and greeters. Volunteers in the nursing units assist in enhancing the quality of patient care by supporting the nursing staff in their daily activities and helping patients' families in the entire unit. The volunteers in the surgery unit help the surgical team before and after cases carrying out vital roles, including assisting with an inventory of surgical instruments. On the other hand, some descriptions for volunteers in the admitting section work with the patients via permitting procedures, including scheduling appointments, answering calls, and monitoring activities in the waiting room. Finally, the volunteered greeters will greet, direct, and assist visitors and patients in the hospital setting.
