New Technology in Medicine Student’s Name Institutional Affiliation New Technology in Medicine Our generation has experienced the largest technological advancement in the history of mankind. These advancements have affected all industries including the healthcare sector. New technology has completely transformed the medical field (Thomas, 1971). It has become faster, more efficient, cheaper, and the care given to the patients has greatly improved. With the presence and probability of virtual reality, smart algorithms, and augmented reality, medicine as we knew has changed and continues to change at a relatively high rate. Formerly risky medical procedures have become easier and people living with chronic diseases can lead relatively normal lives. Genome editing has made it possible to cut out or add various elements to the DNA, which has largely contributed to the successful treatment of formerly incurable diseases. Advancements in information technology make it possible to share the new knowledge among experts in different parts of the world (Blumenthal & Glaser, 2007). The list goes on and on. On top of contributing millions of dollars to the economy every year and creating thousands of jobs, medical technology also has several benefits. The electronic record keeping system has helped cut costs and has improved the safety and privacy of health information. The retrieval of patient data has also been made easier which has helped improve the quality of care given to the patients. With the advent of fields such as nuclear medicine, diagnostics have greatly improved. Thoracic and cardiovascular surgeries have become less invasive (Banova, 2013). Technology has also led to the reduction of medical errors which has in turn decreased the rates of morbidity and mortality. Wearable technologies have had a great impact on healthcare. The recently invented Google Glasses stand out. Hospitals and institutions of higher learning have largely adopted the new technology. Google Glasses are light, transparent glasses fitted with a computer that brings information into the sight of the user. Healthcare providers using the device can get real time access to patient and clinical information. Wearing the glasses, the user can access images, training videos, and instructions. The devices also record notes for health care providers, allowing them to have more contact with the patients, which improves the quality of care given. The time formerly spent looking for turning papers to get certain information is also cut. Moreover, the glasses can transmit point of view videos and audios for educational purposes and surgical research. The device also enables communication and between ambulance staff and emergency specialists. Advice, diagnosis as well as treatment options can be conveyed from the doctors to the paramedics in the field using the device. Google glass offers a whole package with patient health record storage, teleconferencing and teaching capabilities. It improves the patient experience and the quality of care given to them as well as the communication and coordination among various health care providers. It is a must have for hospitals and institutions of higher learning. The Google Glasses have proved to be of great advantages in various medical fields.
