Quantitative Research Critique and Ethical Considerations
Summary of the Study:McBride, A. B., Campbell, J., Barr, T., Duffy, J., Haozous, E., Mallow, J., . . . Theeke, L. (2017). The Impact of the Nurse Faculty Scholars Program on Schools of Nursing. Nurisng Outlook, 65(3), 327-335.
The purpose of the study by McBride, et al. (2017) was to examine the effect that the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholars (NFS) program had on the participants. The program was expected to offer leadership training to the participants in the short run and add to research portfolio in the long run.
The participants were 66 nursing scholars from 46 universities, and they were expected to provide a letter indicating that their university supports their participation in the program. In addition, they were supposed to provide letters of support from their primary mentors, who were expected to attend annual meetings during the three years period. Data for the study was obtained through the use of questionnaires and phone interviews with the first five cohorts of participants. The Institution Review Board of John Hopkins University was responsible for reviewing and approving the research instruments that were used to produce quantitative data. At the end of the three-year program, the deans or directors of the participants provided information to assess whether the program had any effect in their respective universities.
The findings of the study revealed that out of the 34 deans who filled the quantitative data, 30 of them reported that they agreed or strongly agreed that the program had a positive effect on the leadership quality of the scholars. In addition, the same number indicated that the program had a positive effect on the influence of the scholars, either nationally or regionally. Further, 85% of the deans strongly agreed that the scholars understanding of the role of the faculty had broadened after participating in the program. However, only 68% of the dean viewed the program as influential concerning its effect on how day-to-day issues were addressed by the school. Finally, most of the deans were of the opinion that the program was effective in contributing to the research portfolio of their schools. These findings reveal that the program is in line with the expectations in which it was designed to meet.
Ways in which the Findings of the Study can be used in Nursing Practice
As the study revealed, participation in the program had a positive effect on the participants in terms of leadership and influence. One of the ways in which the findings can benefit the nursing practice is by setting up nursing mentors. The positive outcome of the program proves that having a mentor expands an individual’s knowledge. Incorporating mentoring practices as...
