Research Critiques and PICOT Statement Final Draft
Introduction
Nursing staff shortage coupled with burnout are serious problems that continue to negatively impact the ability of hospitals to provide quality healthcare services. To this end, it is critical that modern, appropriate, and effective practices are put in place to combat said problems. It is vital that healthcare facilities are well-equipped, staffed, and managed in ways that prevent both nursing staff shortages and chronic burnout. This paper looks to explore some of the ways in which the aforementioned problems can be addressed in the hospital setting through recommended practices based on the critiques of two relevant studies.
PICOT Statement
Among nurses with chronic burnout, what would be the impact of increasing nurse enrollment compared to exploring the retention strategies in resolving the nursing shortage affecting the U.S. healthcare over the next 10 years?
Qualitative Research Article Critique
Having been already identified as a serious challenge contributing towards the nursing shortage in the USA, dismal retention rates among nurses are a cause for serious concern. In a country where the nursing population is largely aging and non-diverse, chronic burnout is almost always guaranteed, which inevitably leads to exponentially high workloads, nursing staff shortages, and minimal retention rates as a result of high retirement rates (Bittner & Bechtel, 2017).These factors combine to form a potent cocktail of difficulties that plague the ability of nursing staff to function optimally and reliably for many years, seeing as the limited staff eventually ends up suffering from chronic burnout. These conditions point towards a worrisome trend in nursing staff shortages in both the long and short-term (Bittner & Bechtel, 2017). This is purposely because these factors impair the ability of the USA to develop a competent and reliable nursing staff with modern practices to not only facilitate effective healthcare delivery, but also minimize the possibilities of chronic burnout among nurses while simultaneously developing a diverse and balanced nursing staff workforce.
Quantitative Research Article Critique
One of the hallmark features of the quantitative article under review is its promotion of mentoring as a core part of increasing and improving the quality of knowledge among nurses. It is important to understand the critical importance of strong mentoring relationships among experienced and novice nurses, and how they contribute towards the growth of nursing practice knowledge (McBride et al., 2017). The study critiqued reveals the importance of securing new and improved enrollment procedures for nurses, and how these procedures coupled with strong and positive mentoring contribute towards the incorporation of relevant and beneficial nursing practices particularly for graduate nursing students. It is important to acknowledge the importance of this nursing practice approach, and, particularly so, how it contributes to the smooth transitions of nursing students into leadership roles (McBride et al., 2017). At the same time, these opportunities allow nurses to engage themselves in active research directed at addressing the emerging challenges of nursing practice, of which chronic burnout has been repeatedly identified. In this way, this study demonstrates that mindful research can help develop appropriate measures aimed at addressing nursing shortages in the USA over the next decade, only if the findings of said research can be appropriately applied.
