As a registered nurse, I have witnessed incivility in the workplace on several occasions. One experience that stands out to me was when a charge nurse was consistently rude and dismissive towards the other nurses on the unit. The charge nurse would frequently belittle nurses in front of patients and other staff members, and would often make sarcastic or biting comments.
The uncivil behavior of the charge nurse made me and many of my colleagues feel demotivated, disrespected and stressed. Some nurses started to avoid interacting with the charge nurse, and others began to dread coming to work (Armstrong, 2018). I responded by speaking to the charge nurse privately and expressing my concerns about her interaction with others. Unfortunately, the private approach did not lead to a change the behavior. I decided to escalate the situation by reporting the behavior to the manager, but there was no action taken against the nurse.
