Implementation of the IOM Future of Nursing Report
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) devised an initiative meant to change the whole of the medical system and specifically the nursing profession. The report highlighted guidelines for actions and steps that healthcare professions can undertake to improve the profession. It indicates the steps that the states can undertake to improve the quality of care. This paper aims to examine the report and how it related to the nursing profession while focusing on how the action coalition has worked for the Florida State.
Importance of the IOM Report
There are more than three million nurses in America which makes them the largest fragment of care professionals in the country. Nurses can play a critical role in the realization of the 2010 Affordable Care Act (Institute of Medicine, 2011). However, because of restricting barriers, nurses were unable to respond effectively to the changing health care systems. Nurses have remained committed to offering high-quality care to their patients despite the unfavorable circumstances. Hence, the report provides recommendations that will allow nurses to participate fully in the implementation of policies aimed at improving the quality of care in the country. The also report recognizes the need to involve the various stakeholder in transforming healthcare. It highlights how the stakeholders including nurses can work together towards initiating the required changes in the healthcare system.
Role of state-based action coalitions
The state-based action coalitions have a huge influence of on healthcare since they are implemented at the state level (Florida Center for Nursing, 2018). The action coalitions are designed to perform various roles in the different states. To begin with, the action coalitions define the goals that the states should aim to attain. They assist the states in aligning their activities towards the recommendations highlighted in the IOM report. Secondly, the coalitions bring together the stakeholders to enable them to collaborate. The action coalitions appreciate that the transformation of the healthcare system requires the involvement of the relevant stakeholders. Additionally, the action coalitions approach donors and other philanthropic organizations to secure the funding. They use the funds to support the implement the health programs. Lastly, the coalitions undertake educational programs aimed at creating awareness among the stakeholders in the implementation of the recommendations of the IOM report. The educational programs are essential in enabling the stakeholders to understand what is required of them in the implementation of the report.
Initiatives by Florida State
According to the Campaign for Action (2018a), was established in 2011 with the aim of providing leadership to advance the nursing profession in the state. The coalition has come up with an initiative which allows nurses to multistate license. The enhanced licensure compact allows Florida to depend not only on the local nurses but also on the nurses from neighboring states (Campaign for Action, 2018b). The initiative also allows nurses to offer care through telehealth and also when the demand arises in the other states because of disaster. The other initiative aims at building a more diverse nursing workforce that is more representative of the individuals it serves. About 83% of the nurses are white where about 90% of them are female which does not reflect the demographics of the country (Campaign for Action, 2015). The initiative seeks to create a more diverse workforce to enable the nurses to offer culturally competent care and reduce the disparities that exist between different groups in the state.
