A report conducted by the World Health Organization indicates that the global average of hunger is 1 out of every 11 individuals, and a fifth of the population is affected in Africa (World Health Organization, 2024). World food insecurity can be explained by several factors, including inflation (increase in food prices), geopolitical wars that break global food supply chains (Russo-Ukraine War), agricultural production caused by climate change, and unemployment (World Bank, 2025). Observable physical signs are often used to assess hunger-induced malnutrition, which primarily include thinning of muscles around temples, shoulders, and collarbones; subcutaneous fat decline in biceps and triceps, cracks on the skin, delayed healing of wounds, and brittle hair (Allen & Saunders, 2023). This paper aims to summarize the findings from some of the leading organizations combating hunger at different levels, followed by exploring the prospects of students’ contribution and a reflection on my own experience and its significance in this context. Summary of the Organizations Addressing Hunger Three organizations being focused on for this discussion include Feeding America, the World Food Program (WFP), and Action Against Hunger (AAH). Feeding America is the largest organization combating hunger, which was incorporated in 1979 by John van Hengel, who laid the foundation of this entity by initially engaging in the collection of surplus food for distribution among the needy. Later, the organization expanded to a network of more than 60,000 pantries and 200 food banks in America. Feeding America’s mission is “To advance change in America by ensuring equitable access to nutritious food for all in partnership with food banks, policymakers, supporters, and the communities we serve” (Feeding America, 2022). It operates as a secular organization, and students can participate by donating food to its nearby collection units, volunteering at pantries, participating in advocacy campaigns, or raising awareness through organized campus food drives. WFP started its mission in 1961 to cater to the calamity and disaster-stricken population faced by extreme hunger, and today acts as an agency of the United Nations with its presence in around 80 countries.
