The PPACA enactment in 2010, there has been a rise in the number of people who can access quality insured health care. However, in the last few months patients have been complaining of not receiving adequate care especially the in-patients and there has also been an increase in the severity of illness and complications in care provision have become have become rampant. In addition, nurses have been complaining of exhaustion. It has added to the already existing problems in the health care system.
On further research, the problem was found to originate from the shortage of nurses in the state of Illinois but in the whole country. Today, there is a gap between the patient needs and nursing care available. The underlying factor for this shortage is the fact that more patients can access health care, in addition, theses patients remain in the hospital as long as they have an acute illness and need nursing care. This has resulted to deterioration in the working conditions especially inpatient working conditions that have led to poor provision of care and the deterioration of some hospital facilities as they have not met the increasing demand for nurses (Welton, 2007).
Despite the government and other national institutions putting in place several efforts to reduce the nurses’ deficit, minimal action is being taken by the state to cover this gap that is leading and might lead to an even further decline in the quality of care and institutions in the state. This was discussed among some of the colleagues in the hospital all the parties a patient to nurse ratio should be established in the state.
