HEALTH CARE REFORM Name Institution Affiliation Course Date of Submission Health Care Reform The healthcare overhaul which is anchored on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act commonly known as the healthcare reform bill is estimated to run to a cost of $400 billion over a ten year period and is expected to cover some 32 million uninsured individuals. Before it was finally signed into law after a lengthy standoff, there was great anxiety and uncertainties among Americans on the effects that this mammoth legislation would have on them and the effects on their daily lives. For the customers, what this bill portends for them is that those making a higher income or wage they will pay more in tax to provide coverage of the individuals making less. For the uninsured, beginning 2014 the bill provides that they must buy coverage, and this they can do either on their own, or through their employer`s plan or even through a health insurance exchange, the failure of which they will be required to pay a tax penalty (Parks, 2012). Further, the uninsured customer will still continue some major mandates of the law; these include free preventive care and coverage of their adult dependents until they reach the age of 26, with the certain preventive services being mammograms and colonoscopies, without imposing a deductive charge, copay or coinsurance. For the customer who is insured through their employer the law is good news mostly because they will still continue enjoying the key benefits that the healthcare plan mandates that have already gone into effect.
