The future of nursing is a critical topic that has raised significant thoughts and discussions. Nursing is a heavily advancing profession due to the increased demands and technologies. Different reports such as IOM are considered to address the future of nursing comprehensively. The nursing industry is rapidly changing, and more technologies are emerging (Chiu et al., 2020). Besides, there is an increase in the aging population promoting different societal challenges. Therefore, as a nurse, evolution is significant to meet the increasing demands and enhance nursing workforce development, education and practice. There is a need to focus on better initiatives necessary for streamlining best and qualitative care. The major phenomena associated with the future of nursing are, shifting demographics and informatics and education opportunities. The paper addresses the IOM report and its influence on nursing workforce development, education, and practice.
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative played a significant role in establishing the IOM report. The foundation created an initiative in 2008 responsible for evaluating and transforming the profession. IOM generated a report targeting the nursing gap and appropriate recommendations to address the key problems. Besides, key changes in the nursing profession were highlighted purposefully to advance the nursing profession. The Johnson Foundation, together with the IOM, focused on a 2-year initiative to ensure a significant change in nursing. It established an 18-member team, adequately supervised to ensure the nurses' needs were achieved (Shalala et al., 2011). The messages that the report structures are critical since they have positive impacts on nursing education, practice, and workforce development: The first message is the establishment of a practical crew that should guide the formulation and planning. The third aspect is the established companions with other healthcare professionals, including the doctor, to ensure qualitative healthcare.
