The future of nursing is a critical topic that has raised significant thoughts and discussions. Nursing is a heavily advancing profession due to the increased demands and technologies. Different reports such as IOM are considered to address the future of nursing comprehensively. The nursing industry is rapidly changing, and more technologies are emerging (Chiu et al., 2020). Besides, there is an increase in the aging population promoting different societal challenges. Therefore, as a nurse, evolution is significant to meet the increasing demands and enhance nursing workforce development, education and practice. There is a need to focus on better initiatives necessary for streamlining best and qualitative care. The major phenomena associated with the future of nursing are, shifting demographics and informatics and education opportunities. The paper addresses the IOM report and its influence on nursing workforce development, education, and practice.
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative played a significant role in establishing the IOM report. The foundation created an initiative in 2008 responsible for evaluating and transforming the profession. IOM generated a report targeting the nursing gap and appropriate recommendations to address the key problems. Besides, key changes in the nursing profession were highlighted purposefully to advance the nursing profession. The Johnson Foundation, together with the IOM, focused on a 2-year initiative to ensure a significant change in nursing. It established an 18-member team, adequately supervised to ensure the nurses' needs were achieved (Shalala et al., 2011). The committee spearheaded all key activities and gaps to be closed for effective nursing transformation. Therefore, the committee's work led to the establishment of the report due to key processes and resources that it considered, such as raising funds and focusing on comprehensive research. It is also necessary to justify that with the focus on the constant changes in nursing, the committee found critical gaps that, when sealed, would positively impact the profession. Besides, the committee considered the nurses in establishing a reliable healthcare system. Lastly, it focused on extensive nursing education to meet the increasing demands of the aging population. Therefore, based on the provided evidence, the Johnson committee successfully assisted in establishing the IOM report.
Four Key Messages
The messages that the report structures are critical since they have positive impacts on nursing education, practice, and workforce development: The first message is the establishment of a practical crew that should guide the formulation and planning. It was based on effective data infrastructure and quality knowledge. The second message advises the nurses to focus on schooling and training as a suitable way of enhancing the profession. The third aspect is the established companions with other healthcare professionals, including the doctor, to ensure qualitative healthcare. The last message states that the nurses must focus on an effective education strategy to improve their apprenticeship and education ranks (Shalala et al., 2011). Therefore, all the identified elements are necessary for the positive development of the nursing profession.
The recommendations influenced nursing education by advocating for enhanced education as the key solution to address the emerging nursing challenges. It also focused on degree-awarding to allow the nursing population to meet the increased demands of the shifting population. For example, it projected that by 2020, up to 80% of the student body were to be awarded degrees (Shalala et al., 2011). They also influenced nursing education by recommending the necessary education environment to allow the nurses to meet their educational goals.
