Introduction
With the looming shortage of nurses in healthcare facilities globally, the need for more registered nurses has risen. So is the case with the need for nurses' educators. Subsequently, high demand for nursing education has called for innovation and invention of virtual online classes that have since been on the rise over the recent years. However, the primary question that has remained unresolved among stakeholders in the nursing education system is whether the fully online programs are as good as the traditional face-to-face learning programs. Significant reasons why online nursing programs are better than the face-to-face programs are explored in the subsequent section of this paper.
Advantages of Online Nursing Programs
The most notable positive element about an online program in the nursing faculty is the flexibility that comes with the system. Professionals with busy schedules who have to juggle between work and studies are well-sorted through online classes, which they can attend from their homes or offices (Russell, 2015). On the other hand, nursing educators providing lectures in different learning facilities also have their duties simplified. With the online program, nursing instructors can host a large class of students at any given time compared to a face-to-face program where the recommended number of student per class session is 18 (Russell, 2015). The final positive impact that distance and online learning can have on learners is enhancing personal and professional accountability. This is because successful online learners tend to be self-directed and responsible compared to their face-to-face counterparts, who might need to be pushed by their lectures.
With the online nursing programs, students can choose institutions of their choice to pursue the nursing course without worrying about commuting or the institution's location (Hampton & Pearce, 2016). Some learning institutions are adequately equipped with learning resources while others are underequipped. In the traditional format of face-to-face education, learners would have only been limited to attend fewer colleges at their disposal than they could afford to access around them even if they were not comfortable learning there. However, the online nursing program provides equal opportunity for everyone, including learners from rural areas, to access education from some of the world's renowned nursing colleges and universities.
