Schizophrenia disrupts an individual’s ability to interact with others well, make proper decisions, think clearly, and manage emotions (National Alliance on Mental Illness, 2023). Due to delusions and hallucinations, schizophrenic people can lose touch with reality. For instance, the WebMD video “Voices: Living with Schizophrenia” depicts the life of Michele Hammer who has schizophrenia. I empathize with Michele that hallucinations can come in different forms, including arguments within oneself. For example, she sometimes hears voices from the right side of her head saying that everyone hates her. However, the left side says that she should not worry about anything and that she needs to chill (WebMD, 2017, 2:06).
As such, if I encounter someone psychotic in my profession, my crisis response would be to listen to the person without judging her or him. I would approach the individual cautiously and sensitively (First Aid for Life, 2020, 0:46). The most significant thing is that what these people are seeing or the voices they hear are real to them.
