My position on the Oral Health Oral health has remained a persistent healthcare challenge globally but has attracted minimal attention compared to other non-communicable diseases. According to Northridge et al. (2020), oral health is fundamental for emotional, physical, and psychological well-being at the individual, community, interpersonal, and societal levels. Unfortunately, access to quality care remains challenging due to the prevalent disparities. Northridge et al. (2020) report that uninsured or low-income persons often present with poor oral health due to their inability to afford or access these critical services. WHO (2023) also raises similar sentiments and flags the persistent inequalities in global oral health care based on social class and racial differences. Such an aspect explains why the WHO underlines oral health diseases as an issue of concern, affecting up to 3.5 billion persons with a combined prevalence of approximately 45% (WHO, 2023). The expenditure for treating these conditions has risen to about $387 billion, leading to the need for a global policy that promotes UHC. As a result, a policy such as the OHAP that seeks to streamline and standardize oral health to boost access for all individuals is timely.
