Rolling friction, such as that concerning a wheel and the ground, is central in determining how well an athlete can maneuver through various terrains. Rolling friction is the force that comes into play when two objects in contact are in a rolling motion. It dominates the other friction forces on rugged terrain and significantly influences the athlete's motion and performance. The Rolling Friction on the Rugged Ground Rolling friction is friction whose value depends on the tendency of the wheel to roll over the contact surface. Compared to sliding friction, rolling friction usually offers some ease to the object in question, which tends to roll across the surface of the next particle. Therefore, it is established that the rolling friction rises when the terrain is rough – involving irregular surfaces, gravel or soft ground, and so on. This is because the ground also deforms in addition to the wheels, making the energy needed to continue the motion higher (Teran & Ueda, 2017).
