Understanding the public’s view about the COVID-19 Vaccines is important, not only for healthcare workers, but also for everyone. This is because in order to end the pandemic, a worldwide support of everyone is needed in order to prevent further infections and develop “herd immunity” in the long run. Accordingly, disseminating this knowledge was the foremost reason for designing this teaching experience. Prior to the creation of its teaching design, the author believed that there’s no better way to reduce negative perceptions about the pandemic than through the dissemination of knowledge.
Contents of the Course
The main topic that the author has discussed in the community teaching experience was the use of secondary prevention/screening for a vulnerable population during this pandemic. Particularly, it aims to improve, not only awareness, but also commitment from the general populace even before they or their families are afflicted with the COVID-19 virus. This is perhaps, one of the most crucial aspects of the teaching goals since studies would show that a significant number of people only develops awareness when they or their families are already afflicted, which suggests a mere ‘reactive’ approach (compared to a ‘proactive approach’) CITATION Roc21 \l 1033 (Roche.com, 2021).
Accordingly, the author also wanted to make sure that the teaching experience and curriculum is in line with the Healthy People 2020 (HP2020) objective(s) such as teaching and inculcating the importance of social distancing, handwashing, wearing a mask, and staying at home, among others. These ‘proactive’ approaches are crucial for the ultimate goal of preventing further spread and damage of the COVID-19 virus.
Reflection on the Teaching Approach
During the teaching the approach, the author realized that some of the most effective approaches in teaching includes the use of (1) interactive classes, (2) appealing visual elements, and (3) use of statistics.
