Cinnamon is a potent polyphenol antioxidant, which has been used for centuries. Cinnamon ranked first for protective antioxidant levels out of a study with 26 herbs and spices, beating garlic and oregano.1 It can even be used as a natural food preservative.2 In addition to being an antioxidant, it is anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, anticancer, lipid-lowering and cardiovascular-disease-lowering.3 Cinnamon may be protective against neurological disorders such as Alzheimers and Parkinsons disease.3 It can also be used as an insecticide and was traditionally used for dental problems such as toothaches, oral microbiota, and bad breath.3 Cinnamon may be useful in weight loss, as its been shown to reduce insulin resistance. Cinnamon comes from the bark of the Cinnamomum tree. Before my research, I had heard that there were several varieties of cinnamon. The 2 main types are Ceylon (true cinnamon) and Cassia. Since I use organic cinnamon, I assumed it was the better variety. It turns out that my organic cinnamon is Saigon Cinnamon, most closely related to Cassia. Cassia tends to have more side effects, if consumed in large doses due to the coumarin content.5 Cassia, which has a sharper taste, is the most common form of cinnamon. Ceylon is more expensive and has smooth, sweet taste. On a positive note, cassia still has beneficial medicinal properties.
