The video case study between Frank, the responder, and Michael, the Direct Service Provider, shows different parts of their dialogue demonstrating support and communication, including listening, validating feelings, protecting, assessing, and referral to extra professional assistance. The Direct Service Provider listens throughout the two-party dialogue, paying attention to Frank’s concerns and feelings. Whenever the responder reveals concerns or worries about his hopelessness and his son always helping him, the service provider reacts empathetically by claiming, ‘It must be difficult living with Jose.’ Such a reaction demonstrates Michael’s active listening to Frank’s conversation and emotions. As an accountable service provider, Michael evaluates Frank’s emotional status and possible risks likely to face him. For instance, Michael asks, ‘Have you been thinking about suicide sometimes?’ Such an evaluation is essential in recognizing potential risks and ascertaining that Frank is safe. Michael shows his dedication to assessing Frank’s status and safety and wishes the best for him. Thirdly, Michael accepts and validates the 80-year-old senior’s emotions, generating a supportive setting for him to convey his thoughts and feelings openly. Michael reacts with complete understanding when the responder claims feeling low and likes not doing anything useful or letting his friend know about his condition.
