Create your teaching metaphor:

• Read Chapter 2: “How you teach is who you are” (Hill, Stremmer & Fu, 2005, pp 25-41) – see attached

• Review the examples of teaching metaphors in the chapter and create a metaphor that best reflects your personal idea of teaching.

• Create an original physical representation - an artifact - of your metaphor using paint, clay, paper, wire, poetry, music, a drawing, photograph, and/or other mediums (or a combination of these). Take pictures and insert them into your written description discussed in the following bullets.

• Write a description of how the metaphor reflects your image of teaching.

• In your written description (2 pages), reflect upon your own teaching story – your experiences (whether in or out of the classroom) that have influenced your vision of who you are or who you hope to be as a teacher. Include your artifact (or a photo of it) with your narrative.

Seeing someone grow with certain knowledge and skills is often humbling and greatly satisfying. Teaching is arguably one of the most fulfilling professions that one can ever have. Not only does it capture the personal aspects of people but also their entire well-being and existence. I have been a teacher for at least 6 years, teaching preschoolers; and what I have learnt in that time is that teaching gives more life to me. In addition to teaching 3-5 year olds at Headstart, I am also a mother. Motherhood also comes with its set of elements that one learns and teaches the children. It is always a great thing to see a child grow with the right set of character that a parent imparts to them. To this end, I have been, and I still am a teacher both at home and also in school.

For every teacher, there is often a metaphor which they allude to, in relation to their teaching. A metaphor is usually a tool that the teacher or educator uses for reflection; to reflect on one’s teaching approach as well as teaching experience. It acts as the guiding light and an inspiration to them in their effort to be better teachers. For me, the metaphor I so closely relate to my teaching is that of
