Specialists and Teams for the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET)

Essay Instructions:

Assessment Description

The Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) often includes educational specialists who can provide direct input regarding which assessments should be administered to students for determining special education eligibility and making placement decisions. Students with specific documented needs in areas such as speech-language, gross/fine motor, and social-emotional behaviors require specialists to be included to ensure that the assessment results are properly analyzed. In turn, specific individualized services and supports are considered so that students may access the general education setting and curriculum. Teachers should have working knowledge of the assessments administered by specialists and understand the rationale for their inclusion on the MET. This will aid their understanding of the applications of specialized assessment results to the classroom and subsequent collaboration with families.

Review the “Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) Case Study.”

Using the information from the case study, compose a 500-750 word analysis that:

Identifies required team members and additional specialists who should be included as part of the MET team.

Includes a discussion regarding specific information that should be elicited from the individuals identified for the MET team along with a rationale for seeking that information.

Includes the legal and ethical responsibilities of the MET team in collaborating and sharing decisions and results with families.

Cite facts from the case study and a minimum of two outside references that support your analysis.

Scott is a six-year-old with high intellectual capability since, at such a young age; he knows everything about public buildings. At three years old, he became disobedient and threw tantrums when he could not get what he wanted. His parents attempted community summer programs, but he was expelled for his behavior. Fifteen months ago, Scott's behavioral problems surfaced, characterized by being easily frustrated and disrespectful to his parents. As a result, Scott is set for evaluation, and this paper will look into the required teams and additional specialists that could be part of Scott's Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team (MET) team, provide the rationale for each member, and explore the legal and ethical responsibilities of the MET team.
The MET team integrates professionals tasked with appraising a child deemed to have a learning disability (Michigan Department of Education, 2020). Scott's parents constitute one of the crucial MET team members as they will provide a comprehensive overview of the child as his problems began when he was three years old. Other team members include the general and special education teachers as well as the school district representative (Yell et al., 2020). Additional specialists include a psychiatrist who will provide a complete evaluation of Scott's behavior, especially his hyperactivity, emotional outburst, and aggression. Given that Scott's sister struggled with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and bipolar disorder, it could be possible that Scott could also be suffering from the same as the conditions are proven to follow a genetic pattern (Nunez et al., 2022). A social worker in the team will help to address the range of social and emotional issues that Scott has, including isolating himself and disrespecting his parents.
These team members must work together to provide a complete overview of the child's developmental history, medical history, behavioral history, and information on their strengths and weaknesses in academic and social domains. For instance, the parent's information provides unique insights into Scott since his young age. The school district representative is knowledgeable about the school's curriculum and available resources that can help Scott and thus should supervise the services provided and engage in implementing IEP (Michigan Department of Education, 2020). The special and general education teachers must appraise his academic performance to establish his weaknesses and strengths in different subject areas, learning styles, and social and emotional development within the class...
