Shooting is an essential part of the game because it allows players to score points for their team. To become a successful shooter, players must learn to break down the shooting process into four distinct phases: crow hop, wind up, shot, and follow through.
Phase 1: Crow Hop
The crow hop is the first phase of the shooting process. It involves taking a few quick steps to build up momentum before planting one foot and using the other foot to jump forward. This movement is similar to a jump shot in basketball, and it allows the player to generate power and momentum to carry into the shot (National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2017). The crow hop is an important step because it allows the player to get into position and set themselves up for a successful shot.
Phase 2: Wind Up
After completing the crow hop, the player moves into the wind-up phase. This involves pulling the lacrosse stick back behind the body to generate additional power and torque (National Collegiate Athletic Association, 2017). The wind-up is a critical part of the shooting process because it allows the player to generate a high amount of force, which is necessary to get the ball past the goalie and into the goal. Players can use different types of wind-ups depending on the situation and the position of the defense.
