Communication among team members is a necessity in special education. This assignment addresses interactions among members of the special education team: teachers, paraprofessionals, and families.

Select and complete Option A or Option B.

Option A: Family Communication Activity

Imagine that your school has planned an evening open house for all families. As one of the special education personnel on campus, you have been asked to plan and facilitate a motivating 20-minute family activity that will result in more families becoming involved with students with special needs either on campus or at home.

Develop a plan for an activity to increase family involvement with students with special needs.

Address the following questions in your plan:

  • What are the goals, objectives, and rationale for the activity?
  • What are the roles of educators?
  • What are the roles of paraprofessionals?
  • What are the roles of family members?
  • What is the timeline for completing the activity?
  • What is the estimated budget?
  • What resources are necessary for the activity?

Write a 350- to 700-word paper that details your plan.

Format your paper according to APA guidelines.

Submit your paper to the Assignment Files tab.

Option B: Teacher and Paraprofessional Roles and Responsibilities Plan

Imagine that you have recently noticed that the general and special education teachers and the paraprofessionals at your school have been duplicating efforts or expecting one of the others to carry out certain classroom activities. You have been tasked with clarifying the roles and responsibilities of the general and special education teachers and the paraprofessionals.

Create a checklist to help you develop a plan for setting the initial expectations of the working conditions and responsibilities among the general education teacher, special education teacher, and paraprofessionals.

Address the following questions in your checklist:

  • What are the responsibilities in the classroom?
  • Who is responsible for what?
  • How is time allotted for certain tasks?
  • What training does the paraprofessional need?
  • What is the plan for communication among staff?
  • Who communicates with students’ families?

Add 10 to 15 other items to your checklist.

Create a 350- to 700-word handout that details your plan.

Format any citations according to APA guidelines.

Submit your checklist and handout to the Assignment Files tab.

Goals, Objectives, and Rationale for the Activity

The objectives of this program are to establish a welcoming and encouraging environment that fosters students' desire for learning despite the difficulties that come with having special needs. The goal of the activity is to encourage cooperation among all parties involved to participate in
