Engagement is crucial for student learning. As an indicator of learning success, students must be motivated to learn and engage in the lessons provided. The teacher’s responsibility is to ensure each lesson is motivating and engages all students in the classroom environment. Once engaged, it is necessary to understand the individual needs of each learner and prepare developmentally appropriate instruction. Observing students and their learning preferences can support student engagement. In addition, creating instruction that meets the needs of all students encourages student participation and successful learning outcomes. Each component is critical for learning in the classroom environment.
Part 1: Engagement and Differentiation
In 500-750 words, create a handout for other early childhood educators that includes the following:
Explain the importance of designing an anticipatory set that activates students’ prior knowledge, links previous learning, and engages students in the lesson. Provide three examples of developmentally appropriate anticipatory set strategies that could be used with young children.
Explain the importance of differentiation in an early childhood classroom to meet the learning needs of all students and promote positive outcomes. Provide one example of how teachers can differentiate each of the following: content to be learned, process or activities students will engage in to learn the content, products that allow students to apply and practice the learning, and the learning environment.
Explain how differentiation increases student engagement in learning and ensures developmentally appropriate, meaningful, and challenging curriculum for each student in the classroom.
Explain the importance of closure in a lesson and provide three examples of what this could look like in an early childhood classroom.

Part 2: Lesson Plan Part Two Planning Engagement Strategies
Using the “COE Lesson Plan Template” you began in the previous topic, complete the lesson plan by creating developmentally appropriate engagement strategies. Use this completed lesson plan in your Topic 6 assignment. Complete the following:
• Section 1: Lesson Preparation - Complete the remaining parts: title, lesson summary/focus, academic language, resources, materials, equipment, and technology.
• Section 2: An anticipatory set designed to activate students’ prior knowledge, link previous learning, and gain student interest in the lesson.
• Section 2: Differentiation strategies for students in the following groups: English language learners, students with special needs, students with gifted abilities, and early finishers for your Multiple Means of Representation, Multiple Means of Engagement, and Multiple Means of Expression sections.
• Section 2: A closure activity that summarizes key learning from the lesson and provides a quick check for understanding from students. Add your closure to the bottom of the lesson plan template.
• Section 2: Extension activity/homework that supports the objective and is developmentally appropriate for the selected age/grade.
