Collaborative Learning Activity Template
Select an early elementary (K-4) grade level. Create five small group activities aligned to state standards in social studies and the arts that develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Include differentiation to meet the needs of the students on the “Class Profile.”
Grade Level: Second
Social Studies Standards: Form simple queries that will guide any questions about a topic, with support and guidance from the teachers and classmates.
Arts Standards: Establish and explore how different tools can be utilized to create art and design.
Small Group Activity 1:
Standards-based Objectives: Construct paper hats for a musical team

Learning Activity

All students will be divided into small groups to create a paper hat using manilla paper.

Role of Teacher

The teacher will guide the students by explaining the process and practically showing them how to construct a manilla paper hat. The teacher will then form the groups with at least five students each. Every group will have a proper distribution of above and below-average students.

Teamwork will be enforced, where students will assist each other where possible. Every student’s skill will be brought into action.

Integration of the Arts

Every member of each group will be required to make the hat more unique than the other groups.

Media or Technology Integration

The instructor/facilitator will show the class YouTube videos of “Do it Yourself’ paper hats.

Differentiation

Every member of each group will be required to explain all the features of the group and how unique it is from the others.

Formative Assessment

Each student will possess a notebook to write the procedures and draw. They will present images and well-written descriptions of the pictures.

Standards-based Objectives: Who are you?

Learning Activity

The teacher will lead the class, where each student will be given five minutes to explain who they think they are.

Role of Teacher

The teacher will guide the students by giving them examples of who they can choose from. The teacher will make the students understand the purpose of the assignment.

Role of Students

The students will participate individually and follow all the instructions from the teacher. Every student will be given a chance to stand before the entire class.

Integration of the Arts

Every student will carry a souvenir that summarizes who they think they are.

Media or Technology Integration

The teacher will show the class a live media session of kids showcasing their talents and, in the end, answering who they think they are.
