Eliminating play and free-choice time from the school schedule is detrimental to the learning and general wellbeing of the children. Combining the academic skills and play will be essential in laying the foundational skills to the children.
Allocating play and free-choice time enhances the well-being of children by promoting both emotional growth and internal drives. Gestwicki (2015) shares her support for assigning playtime to children as a means to prevent mental illness in the future. In my support, I would also suggest documents such as Freudian/ Eriksonian mental health perspective by Sigmund Freud and Erik Erikson that emphasizes children involvement and reduces chances of mental illnesses.
Various developmental benefits impacted on children also support my support for having played and free-choice time. Some of these benefits include; children tend to thrive in expressing new ideas and pretend roles that shape their lives and personality in the future.
