Essay Instructions:
1)If ligand-gated K + channels were to open in an unstimulated muscle fiber, how would this affect the resting membrane potential? 2)Mary Myosin overheard an argument between two students who could not decide if a weight lifter who lifts a weight above the head and then holds it there before lowering it is using isometric, concentric, or eccentric muscle contractions. Mary is an expert on muscle contractions, so she settles the debate. What is her explanation?

Question (a)
In most cases, most plasma membranes are negatively charged on their innermost parts in comparison to their outermost. This therefore, translates that the plasma membranes are mostly polarized, indicating the existence of variations of electric charge and voltage difference. The charge difference existing in plasma membranes of unstimulated cell is what is referred as the resting membrane potential. The resting membrane potential is the outcome of three elements namely: a) the plasma membrane, which is more porous to K+ in comparison to Na+. (B) The Na+ concentration in the outer part of the plasma membrane becomes higher in comparison to the outer part. (C) The K+ concentration in the plasma membrane becomes higher in comparison to the outer part of the plasma membrane.
Stimulation of a cell by a ligant gated K+ will ultimately depolarize the plasma membrane. In particular, the inner part of the plasma membrane will become less negative. If such depolarization alters the potential of the membrane to its...
