The Relationship between Mexican Freedom and Confinement
Mexico is federal republic with a bicameral legislature and an elected president. It comprises of 31 states and a federal district. This year Mexico was celebrating 200 years of independence after breaking from Spanish rule in 1810. It is widely known that Mexican country was founded by indigenous people where created great civilizations include the renowned Aztec empire. However, the arrival of Spanish rule spelled physical as well as economic hardship for the Mexicans. The Spaniards ruled for three centuries. They brought with many hardship including deadly diseases that never existed in Mexico. Instances of human rights violations in various institutions especially in the judicial system has been in the limelight with human rights commissions filing cases against the polices officers. One of the major complaints by the human rights organization is the lack of transparency in the information relayed to the public. Many soldiers and police officers have been accused of committing crimes against civilians and none of them has been publicly indicted. The reported crimes include rape and battery.
The Mexican fight for independence only benefitted the elite group. Many civilians are still facing oppression in the hands of security officials as well as police officers. In other words, there is still much that the Mexican government needs to do so as to foster equality among civilians. It is worth commending the government on the passage of the bill that advocates for access and transparency of information. This has fostered a higher degree of press freedom.
Transparency is a virtue that affects every other issue in Mexico today. Issues such as human rights, corruption, democratic governance, state security, education, accountability and environment are equally affected by this virtue. The Mexicans experienced a vital transitional moments at passing of bill that advocated for transparency and access to information. As a matter of fact, many countries in the world have borrowed a leaf from the Mexican’s information law. The country is applauded for its active civil society as well as the extensive coverage by the media group.Despite the immense improvement in the information sector, the Mexicans still have a challenge of creating a culture of openness amongst the people.
