Is an education conducted in a traditional school environment ultimately a humanizing or dehumanizing endeavor? Do the costs of education— the scars and wounds it leaves on our bodies, our cultures, and our minds— outweigh the benefits, or vice versa?
This is a formal academic essay that is mostly based on your unique and interpretative reading of one (or more) of the texts that we have read in class. I expect you to have a conversation with the authors in this section (hooks, Rodriguez, West) and formulate an opinion that they will vouch for. You must use their words to support and bolster your own personal main claim.
Writing Specifics:
This is a formal academic essay, thus it must be formatted in Standard Written English. I expect organized paragraphs, complete sentences, and appropriate word choice. Since this is an argument, you MUST take a clearly defined position and work to explain and argue for this stance. There should be very few grammar errors, with no fragment or run-on sentences. This is a formal argument, so please refrain from using the pronoun “I” unless discussing a personal experience. (As readers, we assume that your writing is what you believe, so there is no need to qualify with that term.) Include descriptive detail and when you use a quotation from the text, make sure to include you interpretation of why that quotation helps your argument. The essay needs to be at least 4 full pages but no more than 5.
Presentation:
All papers must be double-spaced, in 12pt Times New Roman font, with 1-inch margins (please check the settings on your computer). Make sure to always save your work in two places.
Evaluation: I will read your essay with these questions in mind:
1. Does the writer take a strong and specified stance on the essay question? Has the author clearly spent a lot of time entertaining the question? Has she qualified her position clearly?
2. Does she support her stance with evidence from the text? Does she include her own ideas and provide an interesting reading and explanation of her evidence?

Understanding how traditional education meets the realities of society and personal growth is essential for everyone. It allows everyone, whether educators, policymakers, or students, to recognize the issues that linger and affect the learner's personal and collective development. In line with this, this essay focuses and inquiries into the question, 'Does traditional schooling nurture individual growth and empathy, or does it enforce conformity at the expense of students' unique identities and needs?’ To answer this question, the following sections will provide some textual support from various authors, but here are some definitions to that effect.
Definition and Overview
First, a humanizing educational experience champions holistic development, emphasizing empathy, critical thinking, and the integration of students' cultural and personal backgrounds into their learning journey. In other words, it is a kind of education that is tailor-fitted and recognizes the unique capacities of the learner rather than forcing such a learner to fit into the mold. On the other hand, the latter definition is what is called a 'dehumanizing education.'
In the succeeding sections of this essay, the author would argue that most current-day educational systems are mostly "dehumanizing experiences" as they prioritize teaching and assessment methods that favor efficiency and uniform outcomes rather than considering their own identity and cultural backgrounds.
Standardization vs. Individual Growth
As mentioned earlier, traditional education's emphasis on standardization often undermines individual growth, creating a dehumanizing environment where the push for conformity eclipses students' unique identities and potentials. Personally, the author of this paper is a testament to this as he felt that the system itself is primarily focused on acing standardized tests rather than valuing his ambitions, goals, strengths, and creative nature, to name a few. For other learners, this kind of educational system could feel very distant, especially as it widens the gap between the goal of personal development and the reality of educational practices.
