Final Reflection This assignment offers you an opportunity to reflect holistically on your experiences this quarter, as well as to put some of those experiences to use by discussing a particular piece of music. Please submit two brief essay responses to the following two prompts. The responses can be separate pieces of writing from one another—you don't need to intertwine them into a single essay, although for the sake of simplicity, please upload them in a single file when you submit your assignment. Both of your responses should be focused, well developed, thoughtfully organized, and carefully proofread. Begin each response with a brief thesis-like statement which encapsulates the ideas you will try to convey in the response. Then, delve into a series of concrete, specific examples which are relevant to your overall claim; carefully analyze each example in a way that makes the meaning and relevance of the example clear to the reader. Finally, offer a concluding statement which reflects on the ideas you've explored. In short, we invite you to put the academic writing skills you are developing here at UC San Diego to good use, and to advance your ideas with clarity and seriousness of purpose. Part II: Discuss a piece of music of your choice (~300 words) Choose your favorite piece from the listening list. At the start of your response, briefly identify the piece you have chosen. The rest of your response should be devoted to discussing your subjective experiences of the music and placing them into dialogue with theoretical concepts discussed in the course. Specifically, you should address: What attracts you to this piece of music and how would you characterize your experience? For instance, what emotion or emotions do you associate with it? Are there particular moments that stand out to you as interesting, memorable, confusing, or emotionally moving in some way? Why do you think you experience the music in this way? Draw on some theoretical concepts from this course to offer a possible explanation for your subjective experiences. For instance, does this piece of music feel tonal? Does it relate to a particular genre or era? How would you characterize it? Does that feeling change? What do you notice about dynamics and tempo? And so on. PLEASE NOTE: You should not attempt to address all course concepts, nor should you try to discuss every aspect of the piece you have chosen. After all, this is a short response!
