Servant leadership requires one to serve with all his heart and soul. It can be compared to a situation where one is called to serve God; this means that one should serve with reverence and with fear of God. Applying servant leadership in an organization means that both leaders and followers work together by serving each other diligently (Dennis, 2004). Servant leadership implies that a leader should be more of a builder compared to being a chief. Servant leadership is more applicable in the current Generational and Cultural Revolution because of the benefits that come along with it.
Applying servant leadership in an organization reinforces one’s nature of professionalism as it encourages noble instinct. Servant leadership is more of action-oriented and it’s about celebrating people and their potential. All these elements of servant leadership encourage team spirits. Teams are empowered as it encourages direct reports, eventually increasing productivity within an organization (Irving, 2005).
Compared to transformational leadership, servant leaders act as stewards by viewing their followers as their responsibility. Accordingly, it becomes their duty to help their followers better themselves to reach their potential. Servant leadership is different from other forms of leadership because it is geared towards leaders meeting followers’ needs, meaning that, followers act as the ends to the means but not the means to the end.
