Your short story will showcase your understanding of narrative forms and features. You should write a story that skilfully includes narrative elements such characterisation, setting, narrative point of view and demonstrate a creative use of language forms and features. (800 words).
Part B: Describe the inspiration for your short story, paying close attention to the particular language modes and features that you selected to include in your narrative. You have had the opportunity to read a variety of short texts as models of innovative narrative techniques. Refer to the text that you have used as your inspiration and reflect on the particular aspects of the text you used to create your own narrative.

Title: The House on Maple Street
The lawn was well trimmed, as were the hedges. Martha stood by the kitchen window and sighed when she washed her hands with the green soap. Her neighbors greeted her broadly and warmly, but their gaze was questioning, constantly probing for an opportunity to find a closer look. She waved back at them with the same beautiful smile as the countertop she had just cleaned and walked away, her face of constant concern back on. Dinner was in the oven like it always was, and her husband, Bill, was out of the house and would soon be arriving home. He liked things to be just right: precisely the color of the roast meat to a dark brown, the vegetables cooked to one's preference, the wine served at the appropriate time. Martha had refined all this to the nth degree, and nothing could go wrong; everything had to be just right. However, within her, a small voice, a small nagging voice, was using the imperfections, the other things that did not fit into this perfect suburban life.
The sun began to set behind an extended range of similar houses' roofs, and the shadows closely followed the light in the living room. Martha stole a coy look at the clock at 6:15 PM. The man of the house would be home in fifteen minutes as usual. She placed utensils on the plate with a floral design that looked as though it was almost whiter than the surrounding light from above in the chandelier. She put a small black cup on the countertop by the sink; it had a crack across it, and she would sit there in the evenings after eating, having tea, rubbing her thumb over the lip of the crack. It was her voice, her one imperfection in her picture-perfect life. The door opened at six thirty in the evening. Bill came in at first; he looked pale, and his facial expression seemed like he had to work for another day in the office. He then undid his tie and kissed Martha on her cheek. "Smells good," he said in a calm voice, doing an excellent job of hiding the excitement he felt inside of him. Martha bobbed her head, and her hands shook ever so slightly while she showed no signs of distress. "Roast as you like it." She placed the food in front of him, and they dined in the quiet, with only the sound of their chewing, the tapping of the spoons and forks against the plates, and Bill's mumbled satisfa...
