My Autobiography Your Name Course and Section Professor’s Name June 25, 2024 This overwhelms me with excitement, although at the same time, it makes me stand in the middle of gigantic buildings of New York, reminiscent of the noisy streets of Santo Domingo, the breathtaking sound of merengue and bachata that one can hear in every corner of the alleys, and the scent of ripe plantains and rice with chicken that still comes from our home kitchen. This vivid image of my childhood in the Dominican Republic outlines an entirely different picture of the concrete jungle of New York City that has been my home for the past 11 years. Here, I have the city noises and threatening tall buildings, and the language I cling to is my native Spanish, but I am struggling to reach my goal in English. In my childhood, I got indoctrinated with the idea of being a police officer. It was not merely the desire to wear the badge but to be the change and become a part of the process that strengthened the ties within the multi-cultural society. Now, at 27, I am preparing actively to turn that dream into reality by getting a degree that will enable me to become one of New York's finest. It took work to adapt to the lifestyle that existed in America. My first few months were characterized by a primary understanding of the cultural and linguistic divide between the two people. I had a heavy accent and imperfect English most of the time, and this made me a loner at school; hence, bullying was commonplace for me.
