Social media has advanced into an integral part of humans considering the impacts that it has on various individual behaviors. Social media platforms are influencing the way people share information, connect, and communicate. There is an increasing prevalence of social media usage as the penetration and affordability of various technological tools keep increasing. As noted, social media comes with notable benefits. However, there is an increasing concern that reliance on social media tools for various communication and information needs could be harmful to mental health. To that extent, this research essay explores the multifaceted relationship between social media usage and mental health outcomes, examining both positive and negative effects. The study draws from a wide range of literature to outline some of the mental health benefits and demerits of social media usage. The findings of this study will be integral in advancing a balance in social media usage in which stakeholders can find avenues of exploring the benefits of social media without becoming exposed to the associated mental health issues.
