Media Influences Advertisement Critique
In an effort to reduce the stress-inducing effects of problematic media images, students will practice traditional media analysis.
Guidelines
Find two ads. These can be web-based advertisements, short commercials, or actual printed magazine/newspaper advertisements.
Ads can be positive and/or negative portrayals.
Write 1 page (minimum 300 words) deconstructing and analyzing the images, thoughts, ideas, and lifestyles represented or implied. Relate your discussion back to class concepts of identity lines, power, and control.
Upload word file to Canvas with ads pasted in the document. If you used a video, provide a link to the commercial in your file.

Media Influences
Media has arguably a huge effect on the perceptions of people in many things. Advertisements often appeal to either ethos, pathos, or logos, and sometimes they can be an appeal to a combination of these. This paper discusses some media portrayals that were controversial to show how big the impact of images on the message of the publishers or sources of the media.
The first example is this French ad on an anti-smoking stance. The images depict two teenagers who are kneeling at crotch-levels to older men, with cigarettes in their mouths, and the manner the stance is depicted is to associate the negativities of smoking by relating it to something very negative but is a known occurrence like sexual slavery/abuse (Pape, 2010).
