For this assignment, you will complete a table to explore how the four conflict styles impact interpersonal communication.
Using the Unit 10 Assignment Template, please respond to the following:
In one paragraph, describe why you believe understanding the four conflict styles and applying techniques for conflict resolution are critical to effective communication. What do they teach us about ourselves and about others in our groups?
Then, for each of the four conflict styles (passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive, and assertive) complete the table with the following:
Using your own words, define the common characteristics of this conflict style.
Describe one example of how this conflict style can positively impact communication in group settings.
Describe one example of how this conflict style can negatively impact communication in group settings.

The four conflict styles (passive, aggressive, passive-aggressive, and assertive) and how to deal with them are essential for effective communication because they show patterns in people’s communication habits and emotional intelligence. By figuring out how we like to handle conflicts, we may better understand how others in our organizations act (Men & Yue, 2019). By practicing an assertive communication style, people can improve their ability to settle conflicts, build trust, strengthen relationships, work well in groups, and solve problems.
The Passive Style
Definition
Common traits include avoiding confrontation, putting the needs of others ahead of one’s own, having trouble standing up for oneself, and passively going along with other people’s choices.
Positive Impact to Communication
Someone who often keeps to themselves may opt not to add fuel to the fire in a tense team meeting by, for instance, criticizing or challenging their colleagues (Men & Yue, 2019). This can prevent the tension from rising further and allow the group to discuss alternatives in an objective environment.
Negative Impact to Communication
When someone is quiet and does not voice their concerns or thoughts, others may overlook or dismiss them, leading to poor decision-making.
The Aggressive Style
Definition
Communicating in a dominant, intense, or confrontational manner indicates an aggressive conflict style (Rispens et al., 2020). Intensely holding or expressing opinions, a propensity to reject the views of others, and a willingness to resort to criticism, blame, or aggression are all hallmarks of this personality type.
Positive Impact to Communication
Suppose a leader needs to make a crucial choice quickly, and their assertiveness helps the group reach a consensus efficiently; in that case, the leader’s aggressive conflict style has favorably impacted the group’s communication.
