Using a Web site http://allafrica(dot)com, http://allafrica(dot)com/ browse news coverage by various news media operating in African nations. As you read some news stories, ask yourself some questions about the newspaper/news service and about the nature of the stories: Does the medium appear to be operated by Africans? Is it privately owned, or owned by a government? Does the news story appear to have a Western bias or news slant? How does the reporting compare, in content and tone, with that of the American media with which you are familiar. Communications and Media
As I was going through most of the stories on the "All Africa" website the number one thing I noticed right away is that most of the media for communication is privately owned. Some of the private owners are influential politicians or people with key positions in the government. They therefore use the media houses to their advantage by only reporting on issues that take the government`s side. This has led to biased reporting. Whereas in America or developed countries the media has freedom in Africa there are too many restrictions. For example in America the constitution gives the media houses protection and also the freedom to report on issues as they see them, but in Africa it is the complete opposite because the media houses are harassed by the government and they are not protected by the constitution. It therefore makes it very difficult for the media houses to work without interference. Also the news coverage or rather media coverage does not extend to all areas of the country, most media houses have their headquarters only in the major cities with facilities that can enable them distribute things like newspapers or transmit through airwaves. This is due to the fact that most places have poor infrastructure and are very remote whereas here in the USA the infrastructure is well laid out even in the remote areas.
