This digital era requires a reexamination of the ethical frameworks as researchers adapt to new ethical standards and face off traditional studies to modern digital interactions. Researchers conducting research within online communities and digital communication systems must carefully address present distinctive ethical problems. Eysenbach & Till (2001) and McGee (2008) present cases that reveal the main ethical concerns of internet research, which are privacy and confidentiality, informed consent, and participant vulnerability.
The first ethical matter arises from providing proper information so as to obtain proper consent from participants. When carrying out traditional research, participants are commonly provided sufficient time to understand the studies before they make voluntary participation decisions. Alternately, the online environment fails to establish distinct lines that separate public and private types of communication. For example, posts made by community members on apparent open discussion channels may be perceived as private, making it difficult to obtain informed consent. This ambiguity calls for researchers to invent techniques to define the consent parameters in virtual environments to avoid such situations. The difficulty of determining whether posts are in a public or private realm directly impacts the researcher's ability to ethically use these online communications (Eysenbach & Till, 2001). Moreover, due to the changing nature of the online interplay, research participants should receive consent updates throughout an ongoing study.
