Section Two: Issue Analysis
Issue 1: Cultural Adaptation for International Students
The issue selected is Cultural Adaptation for international students, as international students need to get the chance to get to know local students. The University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) is one of China’s most prestigious academic institutions, attracting international students worldwide. However, the university faces severe challenges due to cultural adaptations for international students. The major problem is limited interaction with the local students due to cultural and language barriers (Oluwabusola et al., 2024). International students fail to build associations with native students; as a result, they fail to understand local culture and social understanding, build relationships and friendships, and create experiences. The lack of social interaction dramatically influences their academic performance, emotional and mental well-being, social life, satisfaction, and competence.
There is a need for management to integrate training programs, particularly cultural tutoring courses, because such training courses not only help students enhance their understanding of culture but also improve their communication skills. It also helps the students adjust to new environments, enhancing engagement and participation.
Cultural adaptation is among the most challenging issues international students face in foreign academies. It becomes difficult for them to develop meaningful bonds with local students as they are unfamiliar with the language, culture, and social system (Makeeva et al., 2022). International students find it challenging to adapt to the local culture due to their unfamiliarity with the local students’ norms, values, language, and customs, and they often fail to develop a bond with them. The issue is relevant to effective leadership in this scenario because leaders can introduce a culture of inclusivity and coordination within the campus to encourage bonding between local and international students. Leaders are responsible for the cross-cultural communication between international and local students and organize events to increase their interaction and engagement within the campus. Leaders in educational institutions like management, educators, and student representatives are all responsible for the execution of practical leadership principles and strategies to foster cross-cultural collaboration among students.
Effective leadership is of greater importance for Issue 1 because it is the responsibility of leaders to provide and promote an environment that ensures a culture of inclusivity, positive experiences, cooperation, and shared learning. Leadership is of utmost significance in building an atmosphere of collaboration and mutual interests, allowing students from all backgrounds to form meaningful relationships and bond with the local students to adapt to the local culture and social norms (Cakir & Adiguzel, 2020). It makes them feel accepted and acknowledged on campus and in the community, reducing their anxiety and homesickness and allowing them to focus more on their academics, learning, and experiences in the new place. Leaders are responsible for the global reputation of their institute. So, they can make extensive efforts through cross-cultural engagement for the overall well-being of international students and improve their recognition and international status as a vibrant and multicultural learning place.
Issue 2: The Inability of Campus Store Staff to Speak English Creates Difficulties for International Students
The second issue discussed is the inability of campus store staff to speak English, which makes it challenging for an international student to carry out their daily tasks and activities without the help of the staff and management due to the absence of contact and lack of communication. International students visit campus stores to buy necessities such as groceries, stationery, and daily supplies. They face communication issues with the staff who need help to speak or understand English, as Chinese is their first language. So, it is tough to inquire about the price, description, and queries about the products. They often buy the wrong product or fail to purchase it as they cannot make them understand what they need. These students cannot access student services and support because store staff cannot understand their needs and requirements and guide them appropriately. Therefore, the language barrier is one of the most critical issues international students face at the university. They feel isolated and ignored, affecting their performance, motivation, and well-being. The situation makes international students distressed, increasing their confusion and negative experiences within the university campus. It involves the daily aspects of their lives as they need more access to information, and language barriers make it difficult to understand the store policies, product information, and services the store staff offers. They use Chinese as a communication medium, but international students must become more familiar with the language. They feel excluded and isolated in a new place without support.
Communication between students and the university campus’s management staff is essential to address various issues. The store staff at the university cannot speak English, which makes it challenging to communicate with international students and understand the requirements and issues. They fail to understand their requirements, which makes it challenging to purchase items from the store (Wilczewski & Alon, 2022). Therefore, they need help getting things they require daily, leaving them limited access to student support services. Effective leadership is essential to ensure smooth operations and processes within the campus (Ennin & Manariyo, 2023). The leadership needs to offer international students an inclusive and supportive environment where they can interact with people to access their requirements, information, and services. It affects the reputation of the university to attract local and international apprentices. Leaders must reduce the communication gap to foster a culture of interaction, collaboration, and satisfaction so international students feel included.
Effective leadership is essential in this context to understand the challenges faced by international students on ca...
