Introduction
Benchmarking is defined as the process of measuring and also comparing organizations’ activities with other business performers to obtain adequate information on how it can improve the efficiency in its operations. Exxon-Mobil Corporation is the third largest company in terms of revenue based in the US which deals in oil and gas.
Exxon-Mobil focuses on the safety of the people, environment and its facilities. As a benchmark technique, after the disastrous Valdez oil spills in 1989 and Brooklyn oil spills, the company embarked on forming the Operations Integrity Management System (OIMS) so as to avoid future risks by doing inquiries into accidents and incidents that occur. For instance, after the Columbia space-shuttle collision in 2003, Exxon-Mobil assembled a team of engineers and other experts who studied the incident and gave recommendations on how the company will avoid such occurrences within their operations. In supply chain metrics, the company uses scorecards and dashboards to compare exploration, drilling, truck and ocean shipment and warehousing and inventory costs incurred and the benefits with other active companies. Finally, the company also studies financial and operational reports from rival companies and index with their reports.
