Billy is 5 years old and lives in a multi-family home. He often comes to class smelly and in dirty clothes on a regular basis. He has not bathed in the past week or more and often wears the same clothes for the entire school week. Other kids have started complaining that they do not want to sit near him because he is dirty.
The teacher should respond with empathy and understanding, showing Billy kindness while addressing the situation diplomatically (American Psychological Association [APA], 2017).
Observe and Gather Information: The teacher should monitor Billy's behavior and engage in conversations to assess his home environment. Understanding the student's context is crucial for appropriate support (McCoy & Theunissen, 2018).

He has tantrums, stomps his feet, and even throws things at the teacher on a regular basis. His communication delay makes it more difficult for him to verbalize his needs. Today, he shoved another student, who then fell into a bookcase and needed stitches.
The teacher should respond with a calm demeanor, addressing Josiah’s behavior while providing him with alternatives to express himself (APA, 2017).
Implement Behavior Management Strategies: Use positive reinforcement for good behavior and redirection techniques when he acts out. Encouragement of positive behavior can help him learn appropriate social skills (McCoy & Theunissen, 2018).
Develop a Behavior Plan: In collaboration with special educators, create a plan to support Josiah's emotional and communicative needs. Rationale: Tailored support can assist children with delays in communication (Center for the Study of Social Policy, 2020)
Communicate with Parents: Discuss Josiah's progress and enlist the family’s support in reinforcing specific behavior goals at home. Family engagement can enhance consistency in behavior management (APA, 2017).
