Diversity into the classroom
Coursework Instructions:
Teachers are instrumental in incorporating diversity into the classroom. It is important that teachers are aware of the diverse cultures and family structures of the many students who are in their classroom.
For this assignment, imagine you are a veteran preschool teacher in a Title 1 school. Your principal has asked you to create a training video for other members of the school team to explain the importance of incorporating diversity in the early childhood classroom and strategies to incorporate your student’s cultures in the class setting. Review the "ECS-325 Preschool Class Profile" to inform your training video.
Create a 3-5 minute training video for classroom stakeholders, including paraprofessionals, volunteers, resource teachers, and other personnel who interact with students in the early childhood classroom. Using the "ECS-325 Preschool Class Profile," explain the following within that classroom environment:
Rationale for incorporating cultural diversity in the classroom, including benefits and challenges.
How incorporating diversity could affect students, their families, the classroom, or other staff at the school.
How families and other community members could assist in developing reciprocal relationships.
At least three strategies a teacher or other stakeholder could implement in the classroom to embrace the diverse cultures and backgrounds that are represented in the class profile.
Remember that video and audio quality are important and should be taken into consideration. Ensure your video is filmed with sufficient lighting and that the volume is adequate for viewers to hear. Intonation, expression, proper speech, and professional attire are expected.
Refer to "Recording, Editing, and Uploading a Video or Podcast" and use an online video platform such as Zoom, Loom, YouTube, or Vimeo to upload your completed video. If you upload your video to YouTube, select the “unlisted” option. Ensure that others can access and view your linked video prior to submission.
Support your rationale with 2-3 scholarly resources.
Submit your resources, and a link to the video in a Word document.

Rationale for Incorporating Cultural Diversity in the Classroom
Establishing cultural diversity in classrooms is necessary to build inclusive spaces with equal learning opportunities. Increasing student population diversity requires educators to understand and appreciate different cultural, socioeconomic, and linguistic elements in their classrooms. Culturally responsive education helps students become more engaged in academics and socially and improves their emotional development by validating their cultural experiences (Gay, 2018). A curriculum that includes student cultures helps students feel connected to the academic material and engages them more in educational activities.
Achieving cultural diversity integration in education faces multiple obstacles in the classroom environment. Language differences, cultural conflicts, and diverse family standards prove challenging to teachers in their professional practice. For example, Alessandra and Antonio, who attend the ECS-325 Preschool Class, may face obstacles in English communication because they belong to the English Language Learner (ELL) group. Educators should provide language support and an inclusive environment that ensures students feel safe expressing themselves (School of Education, 2023). Where diverse backgrounds exist, the advantages students gain from a classroom make up for every challenge they encounter.
How Incorporating Diversity Affects Students, Families, and Staff
The presence of diversity profoundly affects learners, their relatives, and members of the school environment. A culturally inclusive classroom fosters a sense of belonging and self-worth for students. Children develop positive self-identity when they observe their cultures in school activities and literary materials. For instance, Diego, who has an older sister in kindergarten, will become more engaged in the classroom after the teacher includes stories featuring sibling relationships from different cultures. Children better understand how their personal backgrounds and experiences matter through this type of representation (Souto-Manning, 2013). Educational diversity in schools shows respe...
