Different theories and methodologies of interpretation mean that a single Biblical passage may be viewed from different perspectives. This paper will compare and contrast the literal, allegorical, and anagogical hermeneutic approaches of the three commentaries on Psalm 121: 1-8. This passage discusses divine protection, trust, and reliance on God. Literal Hermeneutics Literal analysis means deciphering a text based on its historical context and linguistic construction. There are some Biblical scriptures addressing believers directly. This means the chosen interpretation will rely solely on the plain meaning of the words used. Psalms 121: 1-8 emphasizes the psalmist’s journey and immediate physical safety concerns. The text presents enemies and challenges in an individual’s life using the imagery of hills. The literal reading sees the psalmist seeking reassurance that God, not the hills or any other source, provides protection. The subsequent verses describe God as a “keeper” who protects and provides for His faithful. This is a promise of safety because God is always alert and aware of the needs of His people.
