Then, using the commentaries, I would like you to answer the following questions:
1. What (if anything) did you learn about the history of the story? Are there clues in the text that suggest we should read the story as something other than objective historical reporting?
2. How is Ehud described? What are some of the important features about him/his character/his skill set? How does the author use these features in the telling of the story?

Commentary Analysis
1 Reading the story of Ehud could teach one that some aspects of the text may need to be more theoretically accurate. All three commentators agree that the Moabite oppressors were scoffers and that the Israelites' sins and the divine deliverance remind the Old Testament story; however, they also focus on the narrative and symbolic aspects of the section. The nature of the story and, in particular, the cycle of disobeying God and being saved, reflects the theological preoccupation of the historiographic work written according to the Deuteronomistic history, which systematically uses historical history for education of conveying lessons in moral and religious histories rather than aiming at the accuracy of history. Even such a historical figure as Eglon and the tales of his demise, where even his physical huge size is emphasized, leave much to the figure or allegory than pure history.
