In this case study, Jerome is the contemplation of change. He is aware of the effects that his smoking habit is having on his health and has found a source of motivation to make changes to his lifestyle. However, this is mixed with recent failure and ambivalence due to relapses in ceasing smoking. Harm-Reduction Strategy The best harm-reduction approach that Jerome should prioritize is reducing the number of cigarettes he smokes daily. This objective is specific and measurable daily by the client, and he may decide to record the number of cigarettes smoked per day for documentation purposes (Berthold, 2016). By reducing the daily quantity, he can allow his body to adjust to his new norm and gradually experience no relapses. Quitting smoking abruptly is not advisable because the withdrawal symptoms associated with the sudden removal of cigarettes from his life will affect Jerome’s daily roles and responsibilities.
