My group comprised four individuals: Megan, Rachel, Brooklyn, and I. We scheduled meeting dates and times by coordinating over a WhatsApp group chat. Each member collaborated efficiently by exchanging ideas and offering constructive criticism, enabling us to develop and improve our micro-skills. The mutual assistance we offered in discovering and practicing the reflection of emotions and significance, organizing and concentrating on summaries, and acknowledging inconsistencies was quite beneficial.
Activity One: Exercise 1: Identifying Feelings and Reflecting Feelings
InΒ the first statement, it was evident that there was a collective observation of apprehension and unease. We collectively expressed distress and apprehension as primary emotions during our group discussion. We initially identified frustration during the debate. As the discussion progressed, emotions such as heartbreak, disappointment, and hurt were later identified. The third comment conveyed a prevailing sentiment of the client feeling undervalued by their manager. Most statements conveyed irritation, fatigue, tension, low spirits, and exhaustion. I excelled at accurately conveying emotions with this activity. Many of my statements closely corresponded with my peers, indicating a collective understanding of the client's remarks. The client appeared to have reached a point of conclusion with the matter and seemed prepared to seek a new position.
During our discussion with colleagues, I observed that although our reflections had similarities, some of my peers employed more appropriate terminology in their statements. I was improving my emotional lexicon. Collectively, we effectively recognized and expressed the fundamental emotions that underlie each assertion. Each of us contributed distinct viewpoints, enhancing the conversation and enabling us to sharpen our reflections with greater accuracy and empathy. Upon observation, I saw that specific reactions effectively demonstrated proper comprehension when the expression of emotions was linked to a restatement of the original message. The modulation of voice, countenance, and physical gestures collectively significantly influence how our messages are comprehended. This presented a significant obstacle. We were unable to assess the client's demeanor or facial cues. Young (2021) asserts that precisely mirroring a client's emotions helps enhance the therapeutic alliance by demonstrating comprehension.
Activity Two: Exercise 1: Reflecting Meaning
Our group participated in an elaborate role-playing activity to enhance our ability to analyze and interpret significance, following the principles outlined by Young (2021). Every counselor adeptly reiterated the personal influence and importance of the event that the client was recounting (Young, 2021). This exercise offered a singular experience, providing insights from three separate perspectives. The client continuously displayed authenticity by harmonizing the content of their narrative by paraphrasing and showing awareness of why they elaborated on various concerns. As the client, I deeply understood how crucial it is for a helper to convey my narrative and feelings appropriately. Managing emotions empowers you to guide and assist others while enhancing your happiness and success. Furthermore, I acknowledged the importance of skillfully formulated inquiries that directed me to explore further and gain a more comprehensive understanding of my issues.
As a spectator, I gained great insights by watching from the sidelines and carefully observing how the words used by both the counselor and client affected their body language and facial emotions. Enhanced comprehension of the emotional undertones in the discourse was achieved by closely observing the tiny changes in posture, eye contact, and facial expressions. Ibrahim et al. (2023) assert that this experience enhances the ability to perceive these non-verbal cues and understand interaction dyn...
