When you are helping clients, it is important to possess an understanding of the theory behind the work that you are doing. It is also useful to have a working knowledge of scientific methods, even if you do not plan to be a researcher. For example, teachers and therapists often use scientific methods in their work.
For this assignment, you will write a 2- to 4-page essay that explains how you would describe theories of learning and use scientific methods.
Describe each of the five schools of behaviorism; make sure you distinguish each from the other schools of thought.
Next, select one of the following potential studies:
Identify 4-year-old Amanda’s dysfunctional behaviors in preschool.
Determine whether LED or fluorescent light changes the students’ science quiz scores in Mr. Johnson’s sixth-grade class.
Identify whether giving Lauren chocolate increases her participation in gym class.
Another behavior of your choosing — check first with your instructor.
After selecting your study, be sure to do the following:
Determine the most appropriate methodology (from this unit) with which to investigate it.
Identify the method and set up an outline of a study; identify any variables.
Explain your rationale for choosing that method.
Discuss which theory of behaviorism is most related to your study and how it is related.
Discuss how biological preparedness/innate learning influences the subject’s ability to learn the behavior.
Your assignment should be a 2- to 4-page essay, not including the title and reference pages, and should include the following elements:
Title page: Provide your name, title of assignment, course and section number, and date.
Body: Answer all the questions in complete sentences and paragraphs.
Your responses should reflect professional writing standards, using proper tone and language. The writing and writing style should be correct and accurate and reflect knowledge of skills and practice of the psychology profession.
Reference page: Sources listed in current APA format.
Include a minimum of three scholarly or academic sources to support your responses and conclusions.

Introduction
Behaviorism is a learning theory rooted in the idea that each behavior is acquired through conditioning. Conditioning can either be classical or operant. In classical conditioning, a neutral stimulus elicits a conditioned response when paired with an unconditioned stimulus. Conversely, operant conditioning focuses on how consequences influence habits. This means that behaviors are repeated if they are accompanied by positive reinforcement and less repeated if accompanied by punishment. There are many distinct schools of thought, and each school offers unique perspectives. This paper will discuss the schools of behaviorism and analyze a case on increasing participation through reinforcement.
Schools of Behaviorism
Behaviorism encompasses several schools of thought, each with its unique perspective on how behavior is learned and modified.
Methodological Behaviorism
John Watson posited that psychology should focus mainly on observable behaviors and disregard mental states because they cannot be scientifically measured. This school of behaviorism is based on the belief that behavior results from environmental stimuli and that all human actions can be understood through conditioning. Methodological behavior is distinct from other schools because it strictly limits its study to observable behavior, rejects introspection and subjective reports, and values the role of environmental stimuli in shaping behavior (Araiba, 2019). Methodological behaviorism does not consider internal processes, incorporates internal cognitive processes, and does not exclude objective measurement and experimental methods.
Neobehaviorism
Neobehaviorism accepts the importance of observable behavior but incorporates mediating variables, such as drives, habits, and expectations, to explain behavior. It aimed to bridge the gap between classical behaviorism and the emerging cognitive perspectives. Unlike Methodological Behaviorism, Neobehaviorism acknowledges internal states that mediate between stimulus and response. Drive, cognitive maps, and habit strength are theoretical concepts that cannot be directly observed but are inferred from behavior (Farooqi, 2021). Moreover, it maintains the experimental rigor of behaviorism but extends its scope to include internal processes influencing behavior.
Cognitive Behaviorism
The ability of individuals to make decisions and solve problems was a mystery to traditional behaviorists for many years. Cognitive behaviorism recognizes that internal mental states like thoughts, beliefs, and expectations are crucial in learning and behavior.
