Pressure ulcers are common among bedbound patients in care facilities. Implementing appropriate pressure-reducing surfaces like static air mattresses and other preventive strategies can mitigate pressure injury incidences. Using static mattresses instead of alternating air-pressure mattresses to prevent pressure ulcers elicits significant research interest because different care facilities can benefit from the research findings. These include nursing homes, wards, and community settings. This research paper synthesizes information for preventive strategies for pressure ulcers in care institutions.
PICOT: In bedbound patients in care facilities (Population), how does the use of static air mattresses (Intervention) as compared to alternating air pressure mattresses (Comparison) affect the likelihood of developing pressure ulcers (Outcome) within a month (Time)?
Method of Study- Article 1 (Serraes et al., 2020)
The authors applied a phenomenological study method in the qualitative research “An exploration of nursing home residents' experiences of a non‐powered static air mattress overlay to prevent pressure ulcers". They described what different nursing home residents experienced when using specific mattresses to prevent pressure ulcer development. The phenomenological method provided detailed answers on the impacts of static air mattresses against pressure injury development among bedbound patients. The patients compared their experiences with static and alternating air mattresses. As a result, the authors collected data, explored the participants' experiences, and reported the significance of static air mattresses.
The study included a sample population of 14 nursing home residents. The participants were bedbound, above 65 years of age, at risk of pressure ulcers or with category I pressure sores, and had previous experience with alternating air mattresses. The sample population was adequate and appropriate for the study because they had previously used alternating mattresses. Furthermore, the researchers gave them static air mattresses to examine and compare their perspectives on the two mattresses. The researchers used audio recorders and transcription tools to collect and store interview data. In addition, they sort the data by assigning codes to the emerging patterns identified after several readings. Moreover, the researchers analyzed the results using qualitative thematic analysis using NVivo 10 qualitative data analysis software. The researchers controlled transfer bias by hearing the audio records while proofreading the transcripts to ensure data accuracy.

The research revealed that static air mattresses significantly impact nursing home residents' lives. The phenomenological study provided insights into how these mattresses prevent pressure injuries among bedbound patients. They prevented pressure injuries by enhancing good sleep, rest, and comfort and minimizing pain when sleeping or repositioning, unlike alternating mattresses.
Method of Study- Article 2 (Adibelli & Korkmaz., 2022)
The qualitative research “Pressure injury prevention practices of intensive care unit nurses in Turkey: A descriptive multiple-methods qualitative study” used a case study method. It illustrates the case of pressure injuries in intensive care units and describes multiple preventive strategies. The researchers applied a purposeful maximum-variation method to select nine nurses. The participants had worked for at least six months in ICUs and University hospitals. As a result, the sample population was adequate and appropriate for the study since they were conversant with risk assessment and pressure ulcer preventive practices. The researchers used interviews and observational tools to collect data. They also used transcription tools to transcribe and store the interview data. They sorted the data by assigning codes for easier understanding and interpretation.
Furthermore, they applied a descriptive content analysis for the results. They combined the interview and observational data to derive main themes and sub-themes. The researchers controlled bias by ensuring no previous interactions with the participants. They also re-read the transcripts to avoid transfer bias.
Study Results/ Key Findings of Study 2
The findings reflected three explicit themes for nurses’ preventive practices against pressure injuries. The primary theme was preventive strategies for pressure sores. They include frequent repositioning, mobilization, cleaning, and moisturizing to prevent pressure ulcer development. Furthermore, the study illustrated varying factors affecting the preventive mechanisms. They include pressure-relieving mattresses, support surfaces, and skin care products.
Additionally, the study highlighted the theme of heuristic pressure injury risk assessment. Nurses reported the need to fill out risk assessment tools for bedbound patients. Therefore, the case study provided information on preventive strategies like high-quality pressure-relieving mattresses to mitigate pressure sores among bedbound patients.
