A significant number of mental health symptoms in a non-psychiatric medical condition can lead to misdiagnosis. A common condition that appears to present with psychiatric symptoms is Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). Monahan et al. (2022) report that approximately 65% of SLE patients meet the criteria for mental health diagnoses. Psychiatric symptoms in SLE include cognitive dysfunction, depression, anxiety and mood disorders. An uncommon condition that typically presents with mental health symptoms is pheochromocytoma. This is a rare neuroendocrine tumor of the adrenal medulla that secretes excessive catecholamines. Elevated epinephrine and norepinephrine hormone levels cause physical and psychological symptoms (Cerqueira et al., 2020). Common psychiatric symptoms in pheochromocytoma include episodic sweating and palpitations, anxiety and panic attacks, severe headaches and tremors.
