Understanding the importance of academic proficiencies in future practice is important for every student. This is especially the case for students in the health-related fields due to the ever-changing evidence about the treatment of any disease. In this reflection paper, the author aims to understand the relationship of course competencies and future nurse practitioner competencies in building the foundation for the student’s future practice. This would focus on an analysis of how antidepressant drugs could affect the pregnancy of a mother. All in all, the author believes that by building dedicating the right amount of effort in understanding the different effects of drugs would help improve the provision of healthcare.
Pharmacology Study
One of the main course competencies that were discussed in the class is the knowledge and familiarity about the effects of drugs. During the course, one of the main topics that the author learned was the proper use of anti-depressants.
On the one hand, anti-depressants are an effective way of treating depression for patients due to its capacity to block serotonin reuptake, which increases the hormone’s quantity in the brain (Whalen, 2018). This helps reduce adverse effects on the patient’s psychological disposition, which is characterized by low self-esteem, anxiety, and suicidal tendencies among others.
On the other hand, however, the author also learned that anti-depressants should be regulated for their potential effects on at-risk patients such as pregnant women. For example, one study conducted by Bérard, Zhao, and Sheehy (2017), the authors found out that the mother’s use of antidepressants increases the risks of organ malformations on the child. This means that a balance between the cost, quality, and safety is important for prescribing this medication to pregnant women.
